{Adding some shading to the yellow gerberas on Keri's Bridal Bouquet}

Don't you just get lost in that middle gerbera? I do. I love how the light hits some of the petals and how the shading creates a depth to it.

This is my view when I paint. I sit on my chair, indian style and with my face only a foot away from the canvas. Sometimes when I'm doing very detailed work my nose almost touches the painting!

{I've shared photos of the final painting and a few from early on in the process. Here's some more mid-way through of this happy bridal bouquet painting.}

After getting to a comfortable point with the bouquet, I started adding the background color. I had emailed back and forth with Keri and knew she wanted her wedding color as the background color. I had some great photos to go by and think I nailed it (you got to celebrate when you can!).

As you can see from the above photo, I added a darker outline to the bouquet in a different shade of blue. After I added the darker detail, I went back with the lighter paint to get a good balance of the two and until the darker color easily blended into the lighter layer. The darker details are only visable when you view it up-close, and from a far, you only see a darker shadow hinting around the bouquet which creates a nice depth to the painting. Both of the light blue and darker blue colors are mixes of several different colors to get the right match.

Believe it or not, this little extra detail took me several hours to do. Luckily I was catching up on Once Upon A time on Hulu.com. Any fans out there?

Once the background was complete, I added a nice clean border to all the flower petals. I do this to all the petals, not just the ones close to the background color. It's very tedious, as you can imagine.

It's amazing how many different shades of the main colors created this painting. Love this palette.

There are many ups and downs, and confusing times. Here's a shout out to some of my artist friends who participated in the recent Arts in the Park in Richmond, Va. These are my go-to people that will help me feel normal, cheer me on and convince me not to give up when times are rough.

The marvelous Lisa Ashinoff who showed her city scapes in Richmond. She's won several awards for her large water scenes and she does shows up and down the East Coast pretty much all year around. She rocks and you can follow her on facebook to see if she'll be in your area soon.

Gene Gregorio is such a funny character and absolutely crazy. He is one of those artists who could paint 20 hours straight, which I'm extremely jealous of. He'll do shows all over the East Coast this summer and fall so be sure to follow him on facebook if you're interested.

David Oleski is a wonderful artists who has a lot of experience in the business. When I have questions or need advice, he's one of my go-to peeps. He has a lot of experience and can share tips on how he has reached success in the art show world. My next art show is a show he is running in the Hampton's July 5-7. Sooo excited! Find him on facebook.

I met Virginia Sorsby Fergus in Richmond at one of the first shows I ever did and I found her so impressive. To me, she just looked like what I pictured an artist would look like. She is such a nice woman and I really enjoy doing shows with her.

Kenneth Lecky goes way back with my husband, as far as to middle school. He does a few shows a year and recently won a couple of awards for his work! Check out his recent photos of the cherry blossoms in DC and follow him on facebook if you please.

Itty Bitty Press is just so cool. It's a husband (Jay) and wife (Bri) team of designers and screen printers. They do posters and t-shirts and are very popular among the musicians in Richmond and Fredericksburg, VA, as they do a lot of show posters. Bri is also Kenneth Lecky's sister-in-law! Small world. Follow their adventures on facebook.

Kris Taylor was my neighbor for my first two years at Arts in the Park and we always had a nice time. Having nice neighbors at a show is key because you're stuck with them and their energy for two days straight. It gets very intense sometimes. Kris is a darling and her copperplate etchings are equally so.

What is etching? Etching is when you carve a detailed drawing on a metal plate, usually zinc, but Kris uses copper. You carve by corroding its surface with nitric acid. When the design is complete, the plate is inked and run through a hand press. Each eaching is an original print because no two prints are exactly alike.

Where do I start with this adorable couple? Mary Lou Hess and her husband Joe were also my neighbors for the first two years at Arts in the Park. They have been cheering me on ever sense. I love her etchings and came home with two of them this past show, and I still want "To Meet and Be Met." Mary Lou and Joe drives all the way from New Albany, Indiana, to participate in the Arts in the Park. I'm very fond of them and hope to see them again.

I hope you enjoyed reading about some of my favorite artists friends and found some new art that you love!

You remember this painting, right? I finished it back in March and here are some behind-the-scenes photos of how it came alive. Looking back at these photos, and on every painting I do really, I'm always amazed by the process. I think what differs an artist from anyone else is not necessarily talent but knowing when the painting is finished and sticking with it until it is.

The challenge with white flowers is trying to make them stand out on white canvas. Not going to happen... so for me, I like to paint a light background, in this case I painted a temporary light sand/gold color just so I could see that I had my perspective right. I liked the soft look it created but knew the client may want a different color in the end.

About mid-way through the process, I sent this photo to the client and suggested a few different background options, including a softer blue background similar to the Royal Bridal Bouquet, which they enjoyed . That bouquet also had white flowers and because I knew from the start I wanted to add a light blue color I could skip the temporary background to help me navigate.

{sharing my view with you. This is exactly how close I sit when I work on the details.}

The client picked light blue and after adding several layers of a flat color, I finished with a lighter blue to add more texture. Then I focused my attention to the details of the flowers. This is my favorite part because I love adding the details and seeing the flowers come alive. How amazing is it to create an orchid just from your tiny little brush? I wish I would pay as much attention to my 10 REAL orchids right now. They are in desperate need of my TLC.

{Lola is a demanding studio cat for sure, but she helps me add magic to every piece I work on.}

And yes, it never fails. Of course Lola was in my lap at times while working on this piece. She has a hand in every painting I work on. When she felt the brush was getting too much attention she would bite it… paying no attention to if it had paint on it or not. The client was so happy with this piece and it was such a joy to work on. I'm so grateful to all my clients and to all of you for sharing my work with your loved ones, near and far.

I'm so happy with my new gift certificates! With so many commissions already scheduled for 2012 (only have a few spots left before accepting commissions for 2013!! crazyness!), I thought it was time to get some fancy gift certificates for customers who wants to give my art to loved ones but can't get a finished painting as a gift in time.

{love love love.}

This certificate has already become a popular gift for any occasion! It's perfect when you want to give a bridal bouquet painting as a unique and special gift at a bridal shower, and as a wedding or anniversary gift, and why not give a commissioned pet portrait or money towards colorful prints?

Gift certificates can be ordered in any amount, and you will receive a gift wrapped certificate together with a brochure in the mail to give. Ordering a certificate is easy, just contact me.

{And I really like the back as well, but I have to add "pet portraits" to my tag line next time :)}

I also recently updated my bridal bouquet brochures. I've had a few versions in the last year but this is by far the more professional version. I tapped my husband's media design skills and he added boxes and worked on the fonts.

The first 1000 are already gone! I've had several vendors requesting brochures recently and thanks to friends and customers, I've sent it to even more stores!

Limited edition gallery wrapped canvas prints are here! These are high quality giclee prints and they look amazing! You can see every single little detail (see last photo). Friends and family who have seen them have told us they can barely see the difference. They are as amazed as we are.

Over the last month or so, Casey (my husband) and I have had several of my originals professionally photographed by an art publisher and who has also produced high quality canvas prints for us. Giclee printing provides superior color accuracy and incredible detail over other modes of reproduction. They can be found at galleries around the world and in New York's Metropolitan Museum.

These are all numbered and signed and I'm only doing 100 of each print. They measure 18x24 inches and are 1.5 inches deep, which is a good normal size painting for any room in the home. The print wraps around the canvas, just like the original, and they are varnished for protection. All come in a nice floater frame, either light wood or black depending on the print.

Quality is extremely important to me. I want to be known as an original artist but after meeting with a well-known artist in Santa Fe, New Mexico (one of the art meccas in the US) who viewed my work and basically told me that high quality giclees are a wonderful way to continue to share my nuturing joy and passion to people at a different price level. I was surprised to see his giclees and not realizing they were giclees. They showed the same details of an original and framed with the same dedication and it became obvious to me that I wanted to do the same thing.

Luckily for me, there's a fantastic art publisher in Leesburg, VA who does prints for world famous artists whos originals sells for over 100,000 dollars. The art publisher does an amazing job at capturing every single detail of my original and that is why I am so excited to bring these to you. They truly are fantastic.

What a summer's dream this painting is. The roses are absolutely poetic! This was such a romantic gift. Eva-Marie's husband, HC, reached out to me several months ago to book this commission for Eva-Marie's birthday. She was turning 30 and he wanted to give her something very special during a surprise party he was arranging.

It was a success! Eva-Marie loved her 30th surprise birthday party and she can't stop looking at her bridal bouquet painting! "Thank you so much! It is so beautiful and I can't stop looking at it. This is such a thoughtful gift!"

The actual bouquet has an interesting story behind it that HC shared with me. They were married at a beach destination and had been on location several months in advance to book everything. They met with an elderly florist about what they wanted and when it was due. They left feeling great. Fast forward to the wedding when they go to pick up her bouquet and there's no bouquet! The elderly florist doesn't even remember the conversation! Seriously, it's every bride's nightmare. Luckily, the florist whips up several creations for the wedding party and off they go! Whew. What a beautiful bouquet they got after all that stress.

Eva-Marie's Bridal Bouquet measures 18x18 inches and is painted on a 1.5 inches deep gallery wrapped canvas. The background color is inspired by the colors of the bridesmaids dresses. Because this was a beach wedding, I wanted to keep that soft and romantic feeling. I hope you like it as much as I do and as much as my clients do!
