Can I have more than one pet in a portrait?2023-04-30T14:34:37-04:00

Erica believes that each pet should be honored with its own painting, but many customers choose to commission portraits of two or more pets to be worked on at the same time in the studio, ensuring that they complement each other.

What do I need to order a commission?2023-04-30T14:33:39-04:00

You’ll need good quality photos of your pet, preferably in high-resolution digital format, and to decide on the size of canvas you want. You’ll also need to pay a down payment to book your painting.

Do I need to wait before my pet dies before commissioning a portrait?2023-04-30T14:32:33-04:00

No, you don’t have to wait until your pet has passed away to commission a portrait. In fact, more than half of Erica’s pet commissions are for healthy pets. Some customers have found it meaningful to have a portrait of their fur baby as they were transitioning to heaven, while others have found comfort in the process of watching the painting come alive after their pet has passed on.

Will this process help me heal from the pain of losing my pet?2018-05-01T16:20:53-04:00

Personally, Erica’s experience of losing her childhood pet, a Yorkie named Lucas, was devastating. It’s a bond like none other and she was left with deep sadness and emptiness – something she still feels today, 20 years later.

Customers who’ve worked with Erica after losing their pets have shared how the process has helped them cope with the sorrow, and how having the portrait brings back fond memories for the whole family.

Here are a few words from customers who’ve commissioned Erica after losing their pets:

“It’s been great for the whole family to have it. My daughter was 10 months old when our cat passed away, and she still remembers her three years later. The portrait helps us to continue to remember her and keep her close to our hearts. It makes us smile every time we see it.”

– J.D. of Georgia, a repeat customer

“I commissioned the portrait of my beautiful 3 year old Elsa right after we found out she had cancer and had less than a year with her. The painting hangs in our family room, right by my desk and it is seen by my family and me every day, several times a day. It brings me so much happiness, so much more than I would ever realize because it makes me smile and happy, rather than sad which happens when I sometimes look at photos. Erica’s heart comes through in her work and I feel it every time I look at Elsa.”

– M.S. of Maryland, a repeat customer

The time it takes to complete a painting varies depending on the size and quality of the reference photos. Generally, Erica spends anywhere from 30 to 80 hours on painting, and each finished piece represents the culmination of her 35 years of experience and the passion and dedication she brings to her work.

What materials does Erica use?2023-04-30T14:40:14-04:00

Erica uses high-quality materials, including archival cotton duck canvases primed with acid-free titanium acrylic gesso and gallery-wrapped wooden frames. She paints with heavy and light body acrylics, primarily Golden and Liquitex brands, and selects brushes based on their feel rather than brand. When using watercolors, she still paints with her first Winsor & Newton paint box from over 30 years ago.

Erica has been passionate about painting since a young age, and her style has evolved over the years from watercolors to acrylics. She brings her years of experience and dedication to every brushstroke, infusing each painting with her heart and soul.

Before starting a painting, Erica creates a pencil sketch directly on the canvas. She always starts painting the eyes first to bring the animal to life.
